The replacement Academy in Portlethen was handed over by Robertson Eastern to Aberdeenshire Council in mid 2006.
The new £19 million PPP school incorporates 15000 sq m of modern accommodation for 940 pupils, including support for learners’ facilities, a community education department, public library, family centre, sports facilities and a floodlit synthetic all-weather pitch.
This school was designed to include a series of two and three storey functional elements. The spine of the school leads from the main entrance and provides direct access to facilities used by the community and the school’s shared facilities including dining cafe, hall and social spaces which open out from this main circulation route. The teaching wings of accommodation lead from this arterial route while each department has its very own storage and support accommodation.
Special external areas have been developed to provide a softer sheltered environment for socialising and study with contrasting main hard play areas, in an interesting selection of materials, used to define spaces.
