Gartnavel Royal Hospital

Gartnavel Royal Hospital

This innovative psychiatric care hospital was officially opened by Nicola Sturgeon, Minister for Health and Wellbeing in April 2008. This is a development by Robertson Capital Projects with design and build by Robertson Central.

A great deal of thought and attention went into the design of this new hospital to ensure that it would be an environment that offers high quality, psychiatric inpatient care for the 21st century and well-beyond the hospital’s 200th anniversary as an institution in 2014.

Working with Glasgow architects macmon, Robertson Central was able to provide smaller ward sizes as well as single rooms for patients, improved clinical and therapeutic areas and educational facilities.

The new design was developed around a ‘hub and spoke model’ with all administrative, therapy and counselling services located in a two storey central ‘hub’, while single storey adult and elderly wards extend in ‘spokes’ from either side.

The hospital also benefit from maximum natural light and ventilation, while attractive landscaping and courtyard spaces are all features of the design which allows maximum controlled movement within a secure and non-threatening environment.
